DIY Mother's Day Etched Vase and a Free SVG File

DIY Mother’s Day gifts are always fun to make because your Mom will never tell you that she hates it. Aren’t Mom’s just the best for that? This DIY Mother’s Day Etched Vase is a quick, easy and cheap gift you can make with your personal electronic cutter. You can also find the free Mom SVG file here!

The SVG file is a really pretty script that reads Mom. It has some hearts and vines to decorate it. You can, of course, remove or add elements to suit your own needs and style.

My supplies were:

Contact Paper – $5.48 on Amazon
Armor Etch – $9.79 on Amazon
Dollar Tree Glass Vase
Sizzix Eclips
Scissors
Blue Painter’s Tape
Plastic Spoon

These are the supplies I used but there are several other things you can use. I’ve seen many successful etchings done with vinyl stencils and other brands of etching cream.

The first thing you want to do is cut the contact paper with your desired template. You can find the free svg file that I used at the bottom of this post.

You need nice crisp cuts for the best results. You may want to take a scrap of contact paper and practice a few cuts to make sure you have the pressure and speed set correctly for your type of contact paper.

I used the blue painters tape to create a transfer sheet so I could apply the stencil with ease. After applying the stencil I highly recommend that you burnish all of the edges by taking a bone folder and pressing each edge down as best you can. This will help prevent the etching cream from leaking under the stencil and causing blurry or jagged lines.

When it is time to apply the etching cream, use either a plastic disposable utensil or a foam brush. Apply it quickly by dabbing it onto the exposed areas. Each etching cream will be different so check the instructions to see how long it should be left on for. The etching cream is re-usable so before you wash it off, scrape off the excess back into the jar.

Once the etching cream is all wiped off you can clean your vase is all done.
